UNI Oct 18, 2019

Stem cell therapy has brought hopes to parents whose children were suffering from all incurable neurological disorders, said Dr Richa Bansod the surgical head of the Mumbai based Neurogen brain and spine institute (BSI) on 17th October.
Addressing media persons about their free autism treatment camp to be held on November 16 at Bhubaneswar, Dr.Bansod said many patients who could have been cured and returned to normal lives were suffering because of ignorance on latest available treatment for autism and other incurable neurological spectrum disorders. Citing one such example Dr.Bansod presented Sangita Champi and her 16-year-old son Anurag of Bhubabeswar who after his normal birth did not have normal child behaviour compared to other children of his age.

Later doctors diagonised him of suffering from incurable neurological spectrum disorder the other name of autism. The child and the parents have gone through immense mental pain till September 2018 when they found this institute on the internet, said Sangita. After interactions between them over Anurag's past medical history since his birth to present condition and medications, the institute agreed to treat him.

In the second phase of treatment, he was administered stem cell treatment in institutes Mumbai facility and after about six months Anurag almost returned to normal behaviour and at present, he was being imparted speech therapy and necessary exercise to enable him for voice interface. It would take some time Dr. Bansod said. The early treatment has a higher percentage of speedy and effective recovery, she added. Elaborating the stem cell treatment process Dr.Bansod said it is a non-evasive complication and side effect free treatment.

With the use of local anesthesia, bone marrow was extracted painlessly from the hip bone of the child using a syringe and then it takes about two days to separate stem cells from bone marrow.

Then through a syringe, the stem cell was injected into the spine of the patient which in normal course reaches brain and repairs the damaged or undeveloped portion of brain. It revives or activates the normal function of various sensory organs of the patient, Dr. Bansod said adding that brain stroke, brain and spine injury caused by accident could be effectively treated through neuro regenerative rehabilitation and stem cell therapy. Giving a vivid scenario of autism Dr.Nandini Gokulchandran the Deputy Director of the institute informed that in USA 1 in every 68 childbirth suffer from autism spectrum disorder while it is one per 250 childbirth in India she said.

In India over one crore children suffering from autism. They were conventionally administered symptomatic allopathy treatment. A large number of parents were unaware of this latest stem cell treatment available in the country since 2008 in this premier institute, Dr.Gokulachandran said to spread awareness among populace over modern and new therapy for the treatment of autism a free autism treatment camp in Bhubaneswar would be organised on November 16.
