A private hospital in the city was on 3rd November ransacked following the death of a three-year-old boy in the afternoon.
The child suffered head injuries on 31st October after a tractor hit him while he was playing near his house in Ranigunj Panishali Gram Panchayat area. He was rushed to Neotia Hospital in Matigara area of Siliguri for treatment. According to a statement issued by West Bengal Doctor's Forum(WBDF), the child required neurology and ventilatory support and intervention, which were duly provided. The patient expired in spite of all possible medical management, following which there was extensive mob vandalism at the hospital, the statement said.
"We from WBDF strongly condemn such ACTS of violence in HCOs. We urge the local and state administration to ensure law and order so that Healthcare professionals can deliver care without fright and fear. We also demand immediate arrest of all the culprits as per the existing laws including Medicare 2009 Act," the WBDF statement said. "We also urge the law enforcement agencies to find out if any political leaders were behind this or even remotely instigated the mob," it added.
The victim was the son of a Trinamool Congress leader and Pachayat Pradhan of Ranigunj Panishali. The Darjeeling district Trinamool leader said a complaint of medical negligence has been lodged with the Chief Medical Officer(CMO) of the district.
