Bengal leads among states in child nutrition

UNI Oct 23, 2019

When it comes to providing nutrition for children, Bengal is ahead of many other States, as proven by data.

This was stated recently by a senior Indian official of the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP). Be it anaemia or brain development, other states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are much worse off. When the average percentage of children born with low birth weight in the entire country is 21.4, in Bengal it is 20.8. Whereas in Gujarat, the percentage of women suffering from anaemia is 60.1, the same is 57 per cent in Bengal. Then, the average percentage of children suffering from stunting in India is 39.3 whereas it is 32 in Bengal.
