Women, incarceration and HIV: A systematic review of HIV treatment access, continuity of care and health outcomes across incarceration trajectories
AIDS Dec 07, 2018
Erickson M, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review of the literature to determine the gendered implications of incarceration for HIV outcomes and engagement in care for women living with HIV (WLWH). Articles reporting outcomes for at least one of the following three measures of interest were included for evaluation: viral load, antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence or engagement in care among WLWH along incarceration trajectories. They identified a substantial gap in research examining the impact of incarceration on HIV outcomes for WLWH, despite growing numbers of incarcerated WLWH globally. An existence of significant sex disparities in HIV outcomes and engagement in care was noted along incarceration trajectories for WLWH, especially postincarceration.
