Why do sub-Saharan Africans present late for HIV care in Switzerland?
HIV Medicine May 11, 2019
Hachfeld A, et al. - Patients from Western Europe (WE) and those from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) were compared regarding the prevalence of late presentation (LP) to HIV care and about HIV testing, including access to testing and reasons for deferring it, during face-to-face interviews. Among patients from WE and those from SSA, the proportion of LP comprised 45.8% (435/950) and 64.6% (126/195), respectively, suggesting that most patients from SSA were late presenters. This was noted as being independent of sex or education level. In this population, important drivers for LP were problems in accessing testing facilities, lack of knowledge about HIV testing, and fear-related issues.
