Weight gain, hypertension, and the emergence of a maladaptive cardiovascular phenotype among US football players
JAMA Oct 23, 2019
Kim JH, et al. - Given an elevated risk of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality among former US football athletes compared with the general population and other professional athletes, researchers discuss the emergence and progression of multiple independent factors correlated with CV risk across serial years of collegiate US football participation. From 2 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I programs, they recruited 186 individuals as freshmen; they included 126 athletes in analyzed data. In this multiyear, multicenter, longitudinal and observational cohort study, they observed the occurrence of weight gain, increased systolic blood pressure, and arterial stiffening and reduced diastolic function over 3 years. Association of increased weight and blood pressure with arterial stiffening and the development of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy was observed.
