Weight change and the risk of incident atrial fibrillation: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Heart Jun 30, 2019
Jones NR, et al. - Researchers investigated how weight change is associated with the risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF). Searching MEDLINE, Embase, Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Trials Register—clinicaltrials.gov, CINAHL and the WHO ICTRP, they identified 10 studies, with 108,996 people, for inclusion in this study. An increase in the incidence of AF by 13% was observed for a 5% gain in weight. However, a 5% loss in body weight was not related a significant change in the incidence of AF. This supports implementing strategies to prevent weight gain in the population to lessen the global burden of AF.
