Watchful waiting in aortic stenosis: The problem of acute decompensation
American Journal of Medicine Sep 19, 2017
Wald DS, et al. - This research was designed to gain information regarding the proportion of patients with acute decompensated aortic stenosis with and without a prior diagnosis and their outcomes. It was observed that approximately 1 in 5 patients admitted to hospital with aortic stenosis reported life-threatening complications attributed to their disorder. Active monitoring was done for over half of such patients, for aortic stenosis prior to the admission. This, in turn, unveiled shortcomings of the watchful waiting management strategy. The potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality was displayed by the measures to identify symptomatic patients earlier and shorten the time between symptom onset and surgery.
