Waist-to-hip ratio and mortality in heart failure
European Journal of Heart Failure Jul 13, 2018
Streng KW, et al. - Researchers studied the link between abdominal fat, measured via waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI) and all-cause mortality in subjects with heart failure (HF) in this study including 1,738 patients from the Scottish BIOlogy Study to TAilored Treatment in Chronic Heart Failure (BIOSTAT-CHF) validation study and excluding patients without waist and hip measurements. They found the association of a higher WHR with a higher risk of death in female, but not male, HF patients. These data challenge the obesity paradox. The pathophysiologically harmful effect of fat deposition was suggested, and this may be a target for therapy in female patients with HF.
