Von Willebrand factor antigen levels predict major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with carotid stenosis of the ICARAS study
Atherosclerosis Nov 14, 2019
Kovacevic KD, Mayer FJ, Jilma B, et al. - Researchers examined the predictive value of levels of VWF antigen (VWF:Ag) for future major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients suffering from carotid artery stenosis. They conducted a large cohort study of 811 patients with atherosclerotic carotid artery disease defined by the presence of nonstenotic plaques or any degree of carotid stenosis. The analysis revealed an independent association of VWF levels within the highest quartile with a 2.1-fold increase in MACE. High VWF-levels were thus recognized to be predictive for MACE and can be used for risk stratification.
