Vascularization and reperfusion of autologous retinal transplant for giant macular holes

JAMA Ophthalmology Jan 24, 2020

Tabandeh H, et al. - In this investigation involving two female patients (two eyes), the mean age was 68.5 years, researchers reported on vascularization and reperfusion of autologous retinal graft following transplant for giant macular holes (MHs) shown by multimodal imaging. They respectively involved two patients with giant MH (basal diameter ≥ 2000 μm) who had an autologous retinal transplant in June 2018 and February 2019 at Retina-Vitreous Associates Medical Group in Los Angeles, California. For the treatment of giant MHs, an autologous neurosensory retinal transplant may be used. Within 6 weeks of transplant, vascularization and reperfusion of the retinal graft are observed. Visual improvement is expected as a result of flattening of the MH rim partial centripetal migration of MH edges during the early healing phase and further centripetal migration in the later phase associated with the retinal graft shrinkage.
