Vascular complications associated with percutaneous left ventricular assist device placement: A 10-year US perspective
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Feb 17, 2020
Patel N, Sharma A, Dalia T, et al. - Researchers used a national database to report vascular complication rates from the use of percutaneous left ventricular assist device (p-LVAD). They performed a secondary analysis of the National In-patient Sample dataset from 2005 to 2015. Experts inquired about common vascular complications and used validated ICD 9 CM codes to define them. They found 31,263 p-LVAD placements. Most of the patients were male (72.68%). There were 64.44% whites. The overall incidence of vascular complications was estimated to be 13.53%; surgical management was needed in 56%. Among all vascular complications, 27.6% and 21.8% were attributable to acute limb thromboembolism and bleeding necessitating transfusion, respectively. Overall, findings revealed a high incidence of vascular complications from the use of p-LVAD including the requirement for vascular surgery. A higher in-hospital, LOS and hospitalization costs were reported in relation to these complications. These revelations should be factored into the decision-making for p-LVAD placement.
