Usefulness of the echocardiographic calcium score to refine risk of major adverse cardiovascular events beyond the traditional Framingham Risk Score

American Journal of Cardiology Oct 24, 2018

Krishnamoorthy P, et al. – Researchers conducted this retrospective study to determine whether Global Cardiac Calcium Score (GCCS; a semi-quantitative score that assigns points for calcium in the aortic root and valve, mitral valve and annulus, and submitral apparatus, with additional points for restricted leaflet mobility) could improve prediction of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) beyond traditional risk scores. Participates included 216 individuals from a general echocardiography database (mean age 59 ± 15 years; 51% male). To each patient, the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE) were applied, and a follow-up of 3.8 ± 1.7 years was carried out. In addition to being easily applicable, the semi-quantitative GCCS appeared to be a marker of additional unaccounted risk factors. Furthermore, it allowed further MACE risk stratification beyond traditional FRS or PCE estimates.
