Usefulness of the CHA2DS2-VASc score to predict the risk of sudden cardiac death and ventricular arrhythmias in patients with atrial fibrillation
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 19, 2018
Kuo L, et al. - Given that, among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the leading cause of mortality is sudden cardiac death (SCD), the most devastating manifestation of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), experts tested the premise that the CHA2DS2-VASc score, involving age and several clinical risk factors, could estimate the individual risk of SCD/VAs for AF patients. Participants were newly-diagnosed AF patients without antecedent SCD/VAs from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. An increase in the CHA2DS2-VASc score from 1 to 9 led to a continuous increase of HR of SCD/VAs from 1.28 to 4.17 vs patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 0. In AF patients, CHA2DS2-VASc score was a convenient scoring system was a valid tool in the prediction of risk of SCD/VAs, along with its capability for stroke risk stratification.
