Usefulness of estimated plasma volume at post-discharge follow-up to predict recurrent events in patients with heart failure
The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 30, 2018
Balderston JR, et al. - Researchers assessed estimated plasma volume (ePV), a marker of congestion, as a predictor of readmission for patients seen early after discharge for heart failure. They evaluated clinical factors, ePV (derived from hemoglobin and hematocrit), and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) among patients hospitalized with a primary heart failure diagnosis and were then seen in a post-discharge clinic. Death or readmission for heart failure within 90 days of discharge was assessed as the primary outcome. Findings suggested that, death or hospital readmission in heart failure patients seen soon after discharge could be predicted by EPV, independent of BNP.
