US national trends in the management and outcomes of constrictive pericarditis: 2005-2014
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Sep 12, 2019
Mori M, Mullan CW, Mahmood SUB, et al. - Researchers used the National Inpatient Sample dataset (2005-2014), to analyze annual trends of patients with constrictive pericarditis admitted to hospitals in the United States, focusing on patient features, management strategies, and outcomes. They assessed trends in the incidence of constrictive pericarditis, isolated pericardiectomy, and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) use by fitting Poisson regression models adjusting for the US census population estimate. From 2005 to 2014, the observed prevalence of constrictive pericarditis continued to be stable at 9-10 cases per million. The treatment strategy adopted infrequently was surgical management. Operative management was more likely to be used to treat younger and less comorbid patients. Findings also revealed that the use of CPB increased over this period and operative mortality remained unchanged, this emphasizes the persisting challenge of this complex disease.
