Urinary metabolomics to identify a unique biomarker panel for detecting colorectal cancer: A multicentre study

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jun 07, 2019

Deng L, et al. - In this study including 342 participants recruited from Canada and the US, researchers investigated a urine metabolomic-based biomarker panel, with a potential for global population-based screening, that could detect colorectal cancer (CRC). Healthy controls were also included. They quantified 140 highly valuable metabolites in each urine sample using targeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. They discovered a panel of 17 metabolites that could be biomarkers for CRC. They developed a predictor for detecting CRC, using diacetylspermine and kynurenine, that generated an AUC of 0.864, specificity and sensitivity of 80.0% each. For CRC, the urinary metabolomic biomarker panel discovered in this study could have clinical application.
