Unmet medical needs in intermittent claudication with diabetes and coronary artery disease: A real-world analysis on 21,197 PAD patients

Clinical Cardiology Apr 30, 2019

Stalling P, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed 21,197 patients hospitalized for peripheral artery disease (PAD) and followed-up for 4 years to determine the burden of coronary artery disease (CAD) and/or diabetes (DM) in PAD patients at moderate stages, and assessed its effect on therapy and outcome. This investigation was based on health insurance claims data of the BARMER indicating an unselected real-world scenario. The presence of CAD and/or DM was associated with mild to modest stage PAD patients being at particular risk for adverse outcomes. A highly increased risk of long-term mortality was observed in relation to both CAD and DM, even in intermittent claudication, and amputation risk was independently increased by DM.
