United States trends in active surveillance or watchful waiting across patient socioeconomic status from 2010 to 2015
Prostate Cancer & Prostatic Diseases Oct 12, 2019
Butler SS, Loeb S, Cole AP, et al. - Via the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Prostate with active surveillance/watchful waiting (AS/WW) Database, all adult men who had a diagnosis of localized low-risk prostate cancer (clinical T1–T2a, Gleason 6, and prostate-specific antigen < 10 ng/mL; n = 50,302) and managed with either AS/WW, radical prostatectomy, or radiotherapy were recognized between 2010 and 2015 in order to ascertain whether AS/WW use in the United States varied according to patient socioeconomic status (SES). In the US, AS/WW use for low-risk prostate cancer was observed to be varied by SES. Irrespective of improvements in AS/WW across SES from 2010 to 2015, in comparison with higher SES groups, individuals from low SES got considerably lower rates of AS/WW. Moreover, SES could consequently impact management decisions, where factors related to low SES could act as a barrier to AS/WW and could require to be discussed in order to decrease any superfluous risk of futile treatment to lower SES individuals.
