Understanding the patient experience of pain and discomfort during cardiac catheterization
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Jul 23, 2019
Mall A, et al. - Given that high-quality care includes patient-centeredness as an essential component, researchers sought to delineate the patient experience during procedures performed in the cardiac catheterization lab. Adult cardiac catheterization outpatients [n = 375; 226 males; 271 white (73%); mean age: 63 yrs] receiving physician ordered, nurse administered procedural sedation (benzodiazepine and/or opioids), were included in this retrospective, exploratory analysis. With pain control and perceived staff concern for comfort, they noted patient-reported satisfaction of >75th percentile (Press Ganey survey), with no difference in preprocedure and postprocedure pain scores. They observed less frequent subsequent dosing, lower overall administration, and similar patient satisfaction in correlation to waiting to gain vascular access following administration of procedural. Less medication could be achieved with optimizing processes for administering periprocedural sedation without impacting the patient experience.
