Type of atrial fibrillation and outcomes in patients without oral anticoagulants

Clinical Cardiology Dec 16, 2020

Ren J, Yang Y, Zhu J, et al. - Whether the type of atrial fibrillation (AF) related to adverse outcomes among Chinese patients without oral anticoagulants (OAC), was investigated herein. From a multicenter, prospective, observational study, researchers analyzed 1,358 AF patients without OAC by using univariable and multivariable Cox regression models. Overall 896(66%) patients with non‐paroxysmal AF (NPAF) as well as 462(34%) with paroxysmal AF (PAF) were enrolled. A notably higher incidence of all‐cause death, thromboembolism was found in the NPAF group vs the PAF group. NPAF was identified as an independent predictor of thromboembolism and death in Chinese AF patients who were not receiving OAC. An improved accuracy in predicting thromboembolic events was achieved by adding NPAF to the CHA2DS2‐VASc score.
