Type 1 diabetes incidence in children and adolescents in Mexico: Data from a nation-wide institutional register during 2000–2018
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Feb 05, 2020
Wacher NH, Gómez-Díaz RA, de Jesús Ascencio-Montiel I, et al. - Researchers conducted secondary data analysis using the incidence registers from the Epidemiological Surveillance Coordination of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, the main health provider in Mexico, in order to determine the annual incidence of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents insured by this institute during 2000–2018. The analysis revealed a decline in the number of incident cases with type 1 diabetes, from 3.4 to 2.8 per 100,000 in insured for individuals below 20 years old. The incidence rate reduced significantly among females and children < 5 years old while the rates increased significantly among inhabitants in Central Mexico. Among Mexican children and adolescents, the significant fluctuations observed in the incidence of type 1 diabetes during the period 2000–2018 seemed to correspond to influenza outbreaks.
