Two-stage debridement with prosthesis retention for acute periprosthetic joint infections
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 15, 2019
Chung AS, et al. - A sum of 83 individuals were studied to analyze the results of 2-stage debridement with prosthesis retention protocol for acute periprosthetic joint infection for average patient follow-up of 41.8 months. They observed the overall protocol success rate of 86.7% with 82.9% in hips and 89.6% in knees. They recorded protocol success in 93.8% of primary joints and 77.1% of revision joints. They noted 6.2 days, the average time from onset of symptoms to surgery for successfully treated cases when compared to 10.7 days for those who failed treatment. They suggested a higher probability of infection control with this 2-stage retention protocol compared to prior reports of single stage debridement and modular part exchange.
