Trends of gender differences in outcomes of cardiac electronic device implantations in the United States
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Nov 23, 2019
Mohamed MO, Volgman AS, Contractor T, et al. - Given the previous reports of disparity in outcomes of cardiac electronic device implantations between genders in device-specific cohorts (eg, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators [ICDs]), researchers examined if gender influences all types of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and, if so, what is the trends of gender-related disparities in recent years. In this national cohort of CIED implantations, 2,815,613 hospitalizations for de novo CIED implantation were reported; of these, 41.9% were performed on women. As per outcomes, overall higher risk of procedure-related adverse events but no increased risk of all-cause mortality was evident among women compared with men.
