Trends in cause of death among patients with multiple myeloma in Puerto Rico and the United States SEER population, 1987–2013
International Journal of Cancer Apr 04, 2019
Castañeda-Avila MA, et al. - In Puerto Rico, and in the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) population, researchers analyzed the patterns in common causes of mortality among patients with multiple myeloma (MM). From the Puerto Rico Central Cancer Registry (n = 3,018) and the US SEER Program (n = 67,733), they studied incident MM cases and determined the primary reason of death. Attributed to eight most common causes, the cumulative incidence of death was estimated. They used joinpoint regression and assessed temporal trends in mortality rates. Among persons diagnosed with MM in Puerto Rico and in SEER, approximately 72% of all reported deaths were attributed to MM. Although a decline in MM-specific mortality was evident, yet it continued to be the main cause of mortality for people diagnosed with MM over a 26-year period. After 2003, MM-specific deaths decreased most notably, which could be possibly due to more recently developed MM therapies.
