Treatment of peritrochanteric femur fractures with proximal femur locked plating
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Jun 28, 2019
Medda S, et al. - Through a retrospective study of 68 patients with 68 fractures, the researchers intended to generate a report on the results using a proximal femoral locking plate for the treatment of peritrochanteric femur fractures. Nine patients didn't report during follow-up. Sixteen complications (9 minor and 7 major) out of 59 fractures were observed. A correlation between active tobacco use and fractures with an associated intracapsular femoral neck component was also recognized. Therefore, the continuation of a high complication rate of proximal femoral locking plates was observed. On the basis of the degree of comminution and the complexity of the fracture pattern, in highly selected cases when no other implant could be appropriately judged, proximal femoral locking plates could be taken into consideration. Hence, based on the intrinsic constraints of these devices, patients should be informed about the possibility of revision surgery.
