Treatment of late bacterial infections resulting from soft-tissue filler injections
Infection and Drug Resistance Feb 28, 2019
Marusza W, et al. - Researchers examined a comprehensive scheme for treating late bacterial infections (LBIs) complications after facial augmentation for its efficacy using cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Treatment was performed on 22 patients with LBI symptoms at a site of cross-linked HA injection. Marusza and Netsvyetayeva treatment scheme (M&N scheme) included draining the lesion, dissolution of cross-linked HA with hyaluronidase, broad-spectrum antibiotic combination therapy, and use of probiotics. Observations revealed resolution of symptoms, with no recurrence of infection at the HA-injection sites, among all 17 patients who underwent the M&N scheme. This study supports to follow the principles applicable to infections resulting from implantation of a foreign body to treat LBI at a site of cross-linked HA administration. Sufficiently long treatment period is required for complete resolution of symptoms. Elapsing of 2 months without recurrence since the symptoms resolved is considered supporting the efficacy of treatment. For treating LBI related to soft-tissue fillers, the M&N scheme is recommended for use as the first therapeutic option.
