Transcatheter aortic-valve replacement with a balloon-expandable valve in low-risk patients
New England Journal of Medicine May 07, 2019
Mack MJ, et al. - Given that major outcomes for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) vs surgical aortic valve replacement are similar in patients with aortic stenosis who are at intermediate or high risk of surgical death, researchers compared the two procedures in patients who are at low risk. A composite of death, stroke, or rehospitalization at 1 year was the primary end point. In major vascular complications, new permanent pacemaker insertions, or moderate or severe paravalvular regurgitation, there were no significant differences between groups. With TAVR, the composite rate of death, stroke, or rehospitalization at 1 year was significantly lower than with surgery among patients with severe aortic stenosis at low surgical risk.
