Transcatheter aortic valve replacement for patients with severe bicuspid aortic stenosis

American Heart Journal Feb 14, 2020

Pineda AM, Rymer J, Wang A, et al. - Researchers assessed TAVR results in patients with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis (BAV) and compared the outcomes with those of trileaflet aortic valve stenosis (TAV). This analysis included 567 patients on whom TAVR was done, including 50 (8.8%) with BAV and 517 (91.2%) with TAV. A slightly higher mean aortic valve gradient was detected postoperatively among patients with BAV but there was no difference in paravalvular aortic regurgitation between the groups. The groups showed no difference in clinical outcomes, including stroke and the 30-day all-cause mortality. The groups had similar 2-year survival. Based on this initial experience, it was concluded that TAVR is safe to treat patients with BAV and yields similar short-term procedural and clinical results compared with patients with TAV.
