Transcatheter aortic valve replacement for patients with severe bicuspid aortic stenosis
American Heart Journal May 06, 2020
Pineda AM, Rymer J, Wang A, et al. - Researchers assessed the results of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) among patients experiencing bicuspid aortic valve stenosis (BAV) and contrast the findings with the outcomes of trileaflet aortic valve stenosis (TAV) treated with TAVR. A slightly higher mean aortic valve gradient postoperatively was noted in those with BAV, but no difference was evident in paravalvular aortic regurgitation between the groups. Clinical results, including stroke and the 30-day all-cause mortality, were not different between the groups. The groups also had similar 2-year survival. As per this initial experience, findings revealed the safety of performing TAVR in patients with BAV, as well as showed that TAVR in those with BAV, vs TAV, afforded similar short-term procedural as well as clinical outcomes.
