Time in therapeutic range of oral vitamin K antagonists in hospitalized elderly patients
Drugs & Aging Jun 14, 2018
Lafarge L, et al. - In this multicenter retrospective study, researchers evaluated the time in therapeutic range (TTR) of oral vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in a hospitalized geriatric population and determined the factors related to a low TTR. Data analysis of patients with a mean age of 87 years between 2013 and 2015 in the geriatric units of four French hospitals was carried out. Data included 2,450 VKA prescriptions. Researchers excluded prescriptions with a duration of < 7 day, monitoring with fewer than two international normalized ratio (INR) values, and patients with prosthetic heart valves. Relative to the general population, geriatric populations showed lower TTR. An increased risk of thromboembolic and hemorrhagic events consequent to an insufficient TTR was observed in most patients.
