Thirty-day hospital readmissions after augmentation cystoplasty: A Nationwide Readmissions Database analysis
Journal of Pediatric Urology Jul 11, 2018
Maldonado N, et al. - Researchers analyzed the Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) for children (≤ 18 years of age) who had augmentation cystoplasty for any indication between 2010 and 2014 to determine the rate, causes and costs of 30-day readmissions. They also conducted multivariate logistic regression to determine risk factors for readmission. They reported that readmissions within 30 days occurred with approximately one in five children undergoing augmentation cystoplasty. An independent risk factor was an indication of neurogenic bladder. Most common reasons for readmission were gastrointestinal complications and urinary tract infections. The costliest readmissions were attributed to non-infectious genitourinary complications (eg hydronephrosis) ($25,286) and gastrointestinal complications ($12,924), while the least costly were ascribed to dehydration/vomiting ($3,739) and fever ($4,803).
