The use of static external fixation for chronic instability of the elbow
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Mar 15, 2019
Rao AJ, et al. - Between 2004 and 2015, researchers retrospectively reviewed 20 individuals to analyze the effectiveness of static external fixation for chronic instability of the elbow at a mean follow-up of 5.8 years. They recorded 19 candidates obese or overweight. They noted the average range of motion from 20° ± 13° of extension to 134° ± 9° of flexion at final evaluation. They found all the candidates with stable elbows excluding 1 who had valgus and varus laxity on stress examination. An incongruous joint was revealed in radiographs of that patient. They noticed the necessity of additional operation after external fixator removal in 8 cases (3 for infection and 5 for stiffness).
