The role of non-rigid cervical collar in pain relief and functional restoration after whiplash injury: A systematic review and a pooled analysis of randomized controlled trials
European Spine Journal Jun 21, 2019
Ricciardi L, et al. - Via a systematic review of the randomized control trials of 141 papers, the researchers determined the role of the immobilization with a non-rigid cervical collar (nRCC) for pain management and range of motion (RoM) in patients with whiplash injury (WI). No improvement in the outcome in terms of VAS score and RoM trends along the follow-up by nRCC application was noted. However, VAS and RoM trends appeared to further enhance at long-term follow-up in non-immobilization in association with a physical therapy (PhT) group. Hence, an absence of an advantage of the immobilization protocol with an nRCC after a WI was revealed via the pooled analysis. Further, on the contrary, an overall better trend of pain relief and neck mobility recovery were exhibited by the non-immobilization protocol, regardless of the association of PhT.
