The role of informal carers in the diagnostic process of heart failure: A secondary qualitative analysis
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Apr 29, 2019
Bell-Davies F, et al. - In this secondary analysis involving 16 participants with a new diagnosis of heart failure (HF), researchers explored the role of informal carers in the HF diagnostic process. Participants were originally interviewed at their homes, with carers present in some cases. Before the participants could take note of the symptoms, such as breathlessness, informal carers often noticed such symptoms already. In normalising symptoms, carers colluded with participants in some cases but encouraged them to seek medical help when no resolution or rather worsening of the symptoms was noted over time. Embarking on help-seeking behaviour was commonly seen in adult children of participants. Via advocacy and organisation, carers coordinated participants’ healthcare during the diagnostic process. Although carers showed interest to gain information regarding the diagnosis, it was a struggle for both participants and carers to understand some aspects of the term ‘heart failure’.
