The role and prognostic significance of aortopulmonary, anterior mediastinal, and tracheobronchial lymph nodes in esophageal cancer: Update of the eighth-edition TNM staging system (2018)
Annals of Surgical Oncology Mar 15, 2019
Wang WP, et al. - Researchers examined the suitability of the omission of stations 5, 6, and 10 lymph nodes (LNs) from the regional lymph node map for the new TNM staging in the eighth edition of TNM staging for esophageal cancer. In addition, they investigated these LNs for their role, prognostic significance, and therapeutic ability in esophageal cancer. They retrospectively analyzed the records of 1,637 patients who underwent esophagectomy for cancer between 2007 and 2013, and found infrequent metastasis to stations 5, 6, or 10 LNs (3.2%, 2.3%, and 4.9%, respectively). The accuracy and survival-predicting effectiveness were not affected with stations 5, 6, and 10 LNs omission in TNM staging. They identified low therapeutic value from lymphadenectomy of stations 5, 6, and 10, and there was no influence of the status of stations 5, 6, and 10 LNs with long-term survival.
