The rate of deep vein thrombosis doubles in trauma patients with hypercoagulable thromboelastography
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Sep 08, 2017
Brill JB, et al. - Researchers carried out this prospective study of thromboelastography (TEG) to assess its utility in predicting venous thromboembolism (VTE). At admission, most trauma patients were hypercoagulable and remained at risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Despite prophylaxis, the rate of DVT doubled in patients with hypercoagulable TEG indices. TEG was useful for assessing DVT risk beyond its current clinical roles, especially in patients otherwise perceived to be at low risk.
