The prognostic value of gastrointestinal bleeding in gastrointestinal stromal tumor: A propensity score matching analysis
Cancer Medicine Jun 19, 2019
Wan W, et al. - Via a propensity score matching analysis of 800 retrospectively studied patients, the researchers examined the prognostic value of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in the gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST, the most common mesenchymal-derived tumor of the GI tract). A variety of nonspecific symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, GI bleeding, fatigue from anemia and obstruction depending on the site, size, and growth pattern of the tumor could be presented in patients with GIST. Hence, a higher risk of GI bleeding in GIST patients with age <60, male gender, tumors located in the small intestine, and tumors 5-10 cm in size was noticed. Furthermore, superior relapse-free survival and overall survival were observed by the contributors in GIST patients with GI bleeding. However, this difference was statistically significant only in small intestine GIST.
