The prevalence of corneal abnormalities in first‐degree relatives of patients with keratoconus: A prospective case‐control study

Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics Aug 05, 2020

Shneor E, Frucht‐Pery J, Granit E, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective case‐control study to accurately phenotype first‐degree relatives of patients with sporadic keratoconus (KC) in Israel using corneal tomography, which can help to determine KC's genetic aetiology. First‐degree relatives ( = 56) of 16 KC probands partook in this investigation. Healthy controls ( = 96) were taken from an earlier analysis. According to findings, KC or KC suspect was diagnosed in 18% of the first‐degree relatives. A significant association was observed for first‐degree relatives between age and most corneal parameters, while this was not evident for the control group. At moderate risk for the disease and/or corneal abnormalities, eye care professionals should consider first‐degree relatives of patients with KC.
