The prevalence of atrial fibrillation on 48-hour ambulatory electrocardiography in African Americans compared to Whites: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study
American Heart Journal Jul 10, 2019
Loehr LR, et al. - In a biracial sample of participants (n=1193) in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities, researchers estimated the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in African Americans vs Whites by using covariate-adjusted logistic regression, with adjustment for sampling and non-response. The study sample had a mean age of 78 years and 62% were African Americans, 64% were female. Among participants, 48-hour ambulatory electrocardiography (aECG) was performed. According to the findings, African Americans showed less prevalence of AF as compared with White older adults, irrespective of the detection method. Despite low overall disclosure of new AF cases with aECG, longer-term monitoring to identify AF by race is recommended in future investigations.
