The preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is not a marker of prostate cancer characteristics but is an independent predictor of biochemical recurrence in patients receiving radical prostatectomy

Cancer Medicine Mar 29, 2019

Cao Z, et al. - In patients with localized prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy, researchers examined the link between preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the clinicopathological features, biomolecular features and prognosis. In this study, 994 subjects were retrospectively recruited, and a tissue microarray was developed using histological specimens of 210 patients. The expression of AR, ERG, PTEN, p-AKT, Bcl-2, Beclin-1, Ki-67, CD3, CD4, CD8, IFN-γ and TNF-α was evaluated via immunohistochemistry. Utilization of the original NLR data revealed no significant variations in the NLR distributions among clinicopathological variables. Based on NLR value, high-NLR group (NLR ≥ 2) and low-NLR group (NLR < 2) were defined and more prostate capsule invasion was detected in patients in the high-NLR group. Overall, prostate cancer features or the local immune microenvironment could not be indicated by NLR, but better biochemical recurrence (BCR) could be independently predicted by a high NLR.
