The predictors of complications in balloon pulmonary angioplasty for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension

Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Feb 23, 2019

Ikeda N, et al. - Researchers evaluated risk factors as well as the mechanism of the complications of balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). Immediately post-BPA, angiography- and non-contrasted computerized tomography (CT)- detected complications were recorded. Pulmonary bleeding included new emergences of a ground-glass pattern or consolidation in CT after BPA that were not recognized on CT images before BPA. Four types of lesion morphologies according to selective pulmonary angiography were: web, ring, abrupt narrowing and occlusive lesions. BPA-related images of 30 patients, with 879 lesions (112 sessions) were assessed. Operators' procedures accounted for almost all complications. BPA-related complications were predicted only by lesion morphology, while there was no link between hemodynamic parameters and the frequency of complications. Bleeding complications were detected and hemoptysis was predicted by CT scan images after BPA.
