The outcome of revision surgery for failed metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 09, 2019

Borton Z, et al. - Investigators estimated the data to assess the consequence of revision surgery for failed metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (MoM THRs). At a median follow-up of 5.48 years, they recognized 180 revisions. They recorded an improvement in median Oxford Hip Score (OHS) from 29 to 37 with revision. They noted the use of a cobalt-chrome (CoCr)-containing bearing surface at revision and increased BMI predictive of poor functional outcome. They found greater functional benefit from revision surgery in symptomatic cases but did not regain the same level of function as subjects who were asymptomatic before revision.
