The number of adults with incident type 1 diabetes phenotype in Iceland is half the number in children – A population based study
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Apr 22, 2019
Thordardottir TH, et al. - In the Icelandic population, researchers investigated the incidence and prevalence of insulin-requiring diabetes in adults by assessing the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes diagnosed in adulthood. They analyzed complete clinical and prescription data to identify cases of insulin-requiring diabetes. They noted mean age of 32.1 years at diagnosis and male-to-female incidence rate ratio of 1.59. Diagnosis in one-fourth of the cases was made after the age of 40. Diabetic ketoacidosis was present in almost 30% of cases and a positive family history was noted in 40%. One case of type 1 diabetes in adults for every two children diagnosed is to be expected. Researchers recommend that in all newly presenting adults with diabetes, the possibility of absolute insulin deficiency should be acknowledged.
