The misdiagnosis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome in a VA population
Neurourology and Urodynamics Jul 19, 2019
Skove SL, et al. - Using the Veterans Affairs Informatics and Computing Infrastructure a random sample of 100 subjects with an ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnosis of Interstitial Cystitis/bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) were recognized by querying all living individuals in the Veterans Affairs (VA) system, experts evaluated the accuracy of the ICD-9/ICD-10 code for IC/BPS. Five had radiation before, 1 had active cancer, and 10 had bladder cancer (all male), and an additional fifteen had insufficient records. Nearly 43% did not have IC/BPS out of the remaining 69 cases. Out of these subjects who did not have IC/BPS, 43% recorded only of overactive bladder symptoms, which was more frequently seen in women than men. Hence, the IC/BPS had a high misdiagnosis rate, in this small sample from a nationwide VA system. Furthermore, these results highlighted the gender-specific diagnostic difficulty of IC/BPS.
