The impact of self-imagery on aspects of the self-concept in individuals with high levels of eating disorder cognitions
Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry May 25, 2018
Harlowe J, et al. - The impact of positive and negative self-imagery on aspects of the working self (implicit and explicit self-esteem, self-concept clarity and self-discrepancy) and affect was investigated. Researchers made participants with high levels of eating disorder cognitions to complete the measures of explicit self-esteem, self-concept clarity, self-discrepancy and affect prior to completing a positive or negative self-imagery retrieval task. They noted improved positive self-esteem and self-concept clarity with positive self-imagery. Reduced actual-ideal self-discrepancies and improved mood were also noted with positive self-imagery. Negative self-imagery, on the other hand, demonstrated a negative impact on the self-concept and affect. In this group, positive imagery retrieval may provide help to improve self-concept.
