The impact of keratoconus treatment with the Athens Protocol (partial topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy combined with higher-fluence corneal collagen cross-linking) on quality of life: A long-term study

Clinical Ophthalmology May 10, 2019

Kanellopoulos AJ - The present investigation assesses the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in keratoconus (KCN) patients treated with Combined Topography-Guided Transepithelial partial photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and corneal Cross-Linking: the Athens Protocol. The researcher selected 34 consecutive patients being treated for KCN with age between 15 to 51 years, each was given a disease-specific HRQoL questionnaire pre and post the Athens Protocol intervention. Amsler–Krumeich classification (KCN severity) was used to rank the disease grade. Findings revealed a considerable improvement in general visual acuity, psychological well-being, and driving ability. As compared to older patients, younger keratoconic patients exhibited improved psychological status and handled difficulties in daily activities better than before the operation.
