The impact of induction of labor at 39 weeks in low-risk women on the incidence of stillbirth
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nov 09, 2019
Po G, et al. - Researchers investigated how induction of labor between 39 0/7 weeks and 39 4/7 weeks influences the incidence of stillbirth in low-risk women in the United States. Using US vital statistics data from Live Birth and Fetal Death certificates, of births between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2016, they identified a total of 12,098,773 births; of these, 155,753 were stillbirths. Among these stillbirths, 3,874 stillbirths occurred at ≥ 39 weeks; 3,584 occurred in low-risk women (stillbirth rate of 0.60 per 1,000 births). In low-risk women, they observed stillbirth rate of 0.60 per 1,000 births at ≥ 39 weeks. As per estimates, in the United States alone, induction of labor between 39 0/7 weeks and 39 4/7 weeks would potentially prevent 833 stillbirths per year in low-risk women. These data may help decision making among low-risk women and their clinicians regarding fetal benefits of induction of labor between 39 0/7 weeks and 39 4/7 weeks.
