The impact of comorbidity burden on complications, length of stay, and direct hospital costs after minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion

Spine Feb 20, 2019

Khechen B, et al. - A sum of 298 individuals were examined to study the relation of comorbidity as defined by Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) with inpatient complication rate, length of stay (LOS), or direct hospital costs after minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF). They observed that raised CCI was linked to older age, smoking, and insurance status. It was also correlated with higher total inpatient complication rate. Although, elevated CCI was correlated with greater costs accumulated in the intensive care unit, laboratory costs, and cardiology-related costs. Overall, they suggested CCI as a prognosticating factor for surgical outcomes and costs.
