The global prevalence of tobacco use in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Aug 21, 2019
Roderick P, et al. - Because global epidemiological patterns of tobacco use are not well documented among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the overall global burden of tobacco use in T2DM. The review included 74 studies that reported data from 3.2 million candidates in 33 countries. Compared with the Americas, Middle East and North Africa, Europe and Central Asia, the global mean prevalence of tobacco use in T2DM was 20·81%, and greater in the WHO East Asia and Pacific and South Asia areas. Patients with T2DM were 26% less likely to use tobacco in studies which compared the prevalence of tobacco use in patients to non-patients. Investigators found that tobacco is used globally by one in five T2DM patients, but usage in patients is less likely than in non-patients. Global usage patterns demonstrated by this review have implications for both diabetes burden prevention and understanding, and tobacco cessation strategies success.
